As communication technologies and services advance at an exponential rate, the demands on digital receivers and transmitters are increasing. Whether designing wideband or narrowband, the same question arises: Where can you find data converters with near-perfect dynamic performance? For wideband receivers that require more than 95 dB of SFDR, where can you find data converters capable of digitizing the GSM band? While not possible yet, wideband data converters with 95 dB of SFDR are not far off. However, through a technique called “dithering,” the dynamic range of many good data converters, such as the AD9042, can be greatly extended to meet the demanding communications needs of today and tomorrow.
