VIM Training Tutorial.rarHistory of VIMWhen Bram Moolenaar bought his Amiga computer in the late 1980s, his most commonly used editor, vi, was not available on the Amiga. Bram started with an open source vi clone, Stevie, and developed version 1.0 of Vim. The initial goal was just to completely replicate the functionality of vi. At that time, Vim was short for Vi IMitation. In 1991, Vim version 1.14 was included in the free software collection for Amiga, \"Fred Fish Disk #591\". In 1992, version 1.22 of Vim was ported to UNIX and MS-DOS. From that time on, the full name of Vim became Vi IMproved. Since then, Vim has added countless new features. The first milestone was the addition of multi-window editing mode (split window) in version 3.0 in 1994. Since then, more than one Vim file can be displayed on the same screen. Vim 4.0, released in 1996, was the first version to use a graphical interface (GUI). Vim version 5.0 in 1998 added the highlight (syntax highlighting) feature. Vim version 6.0 in 2001 added code folding, plug-ins, multi-language support, vertical split windows and other features. Vim version 7.0, released in May 2006, added spelling checking, context-sensitive completion, tab editing and other new features. The latest version is Vim 7.2, released in August 2008. This version merges all fixes since vim 7.1 and adds floating-point support for scripts.
