How to turn a PC sound card into a high-speed sampling oscilloscope through a front end

              There are a variety of software packages that allow stereo sound cards in personal computers (PCs) to provide oscilloscope-like displays, but the low sampling rate, high-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and AC-coupled front ends work best with available bandwidths of 20 kHz and below. Now, this limited bandwidth can be extended—for repetitive waveforms, a sampling front end can be used before the sound card input. Subsampling the input waveform with a high-speed sample-and-hold (SHA) and then reconstructing and smoothing the waveform with a low-pass filter effectively stretches the time axis, allowing the PC to be used as a high-speed sampling oscilloscope. This article describes a front end and probe that can accomplish this transformation. …
