How to Choose the Right Capacitor for Reliable Automotive Applications While passive components such as capacitors are not as glamorous as microprocessors and digital signal processors, they still have to be reliable for automotive applications. Selecting the most reliable capacitors for today\'s automotive electronics requires the design engineer to examine a number of different component parameters and their performance characteristics. The next step is to consider the environment in which the automotive electronics will be used and the specific applications they serve. Now, let\'s look at the characteristics of the four major dielectric classes of capacitors - tantalum, aluminum electrolytic, multi-film, and ceramic; explain the concepts of temperature coefficient and voltage coefficient of capacitance; and see how these factors and others affect the choice of capacitor for a specific application. Each different capacitor dielectric has its own specific capacitance and voltage range (see below). However, since the application requires capacitance values between approximately 0.1 and 10F and voltages less than 50V, there are several overlapping choices.
