Ultrasonic technology deals with sound waves that humans cannot feel. The average human hearing limit is 16,500 Hz. Although some people can hear up to 21,000 Hz, ultrasonic technology usually deals with 20,000 Hz and above. Another way to express 20,000 Hz is 20kHz, or kilohertz. 1kHz = 1,000 Hz. Because ultrasound is a high frequency, it is a short-wave signal. It has different characteristics than audible sound or low-frequency sound. Low-frequency sound requires less sound energy than high-frequency sound to travel the same distance.
