An important feature of IP is the ability to fragment packets when they are too large to fit on the selected hardware interface. Oversized packets are split into two or more IP fragments that are sized to fit on the selected network. On the way to the destination host, the fragments may be further fragmented by intermediate routers. Therefore, at the destination host, an IP datagram may fit within a single IP packet, or, if it is fragmented while being sent, within multiple IP packets.
