From March 7 to March 11, I went to Hong Kong with colleagues from the Planning Department and the Planning and Design Institute to exchange experiences in WCDMA network construction with CSL. During the five-day exchange, we conducted technical discussions on 3G wireless network planning and optimization, 3G indoor coverage construction, and conducted field tests on 3G signal coverage at Hong Kong International Airport, Bank of China Hong Kong Building, etc. The following is a brief account of the experience gained from this exchange test. The population of Hong Kong Island is 6.8 to 7 million, and the mobile phone penetration rate is 100 to 105%. There are many mobile operators, and the communication market is highly competitive. The 3G network was first launched by Hutchison Whampoa in June 2003, and then Smartone also launched 3G services. As a company that has always targeted high-end customers, CSL launched its 3G network on Christmas Day 2004 in the face of its competitors\' leading 3G business. At present, CSL is in the early stages of 3G network construction, with a small number of 3G users and traffic. CSL explained that the high total data volume was caused by data service testing conducted by engineering optimization personnel. Currently, 2G services are still the main source of business for CSL, with a busy-hour traffic volume of 0.02 Erl per user. From the perspective of competitors, Hutchison Whampoa has more than 200,000 3G users after more than a year of promotion, with a busy-hour traffic volume of about 4,000 Erl, and the overall network is still under low load. SmarTone currently has only 2,000 to 3,000 3G users.
