Single-supply amplifiers with rail-to-rail outputs are advertised as creating a false sense of security. Figure 1 shows the output swing of a typical single-supply amplifier when driving the output rails. Before the output swing reaches its maximum, the linearity of the amplifier begins to degrade significantly, and the amplifier output cannot reach any supply voltage.
