This book provides a comprehensive introduction to scalable processor architectures, tools for instruction set extensions, and multiprocessor SOC architectures for embedded systems. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides a high-level introduction to many SOC design problems and their solutions. The second part provides a detailed discussion of the comparison between scalable processors, traditional processors, and hard-wired logic circuits. The last part gives a series of detailed examples to further illustrate the usability of the new SOC design method. The book uses the Xtensa architecture and Tensilica instruction extension language from Tensilica to accurately describe the practical problems and opportunities associated with this new method. This book is mainly aimed at architects, circuit designers, and programmers who are engaged in complex SOC design. It can also be used as a reference for teachers and students in related majors in colleges and universities.
