The
HD25
is a rugged optical incremental shaft encoder designed for heavy duty industrial
use. It serves as a position feedback device by converting real-time shaft angle, speed, and
direction into digital quadrature outputs with index. A variety of versions may be ordered
including:
Ø
Low voltage (+5V) version.
Ø
High voltage version that operates from +9.5 to 32 volts. The digital output levels virtually
switch between 0V and the positive power supply voltage.
Ø
7-pin screw-on connector for single ended with or without index (third channel).
MIL-C-5015 type connector.
Ø
10-pin screw-on connector for differential outputs with or without index (third channel).
MIL-C-5015 type connector.
Ø
Cable version comes standard with a 6' pig-tail; longer lengths available.
Ø
Shaft seal to protect the encoder from liquids. Note that this option adds about 3.5 in-oz
of shaft drag.
Ø
3/8" diameter shaft with or without flat.
Applications
Ø
Automation, robotics, motion control, elevator controls, machine tools, food processing,
X-Y tables and conveyors.
Ø
Lathes, grinders, CNC machine tools, high performance servos, test equipment, pack-
aging machines, balance machines and cutting machines.
Ø
Web processing, rotary tables, transfer machines, stacker cranes, press controls,
printing presses and pump controls.
Ø
Oil field equipment, saw mill machinery and construction machinery.
technology; disk does not contact optic.

Optional index (3rd channel).
ABEC 5 bearings.
3/8" diameter shaft, flat option available.
Built-in heavy duty cable drivers.
Operating temperature -40° to +100°C (low voltage version).
Operating temperature -40° to +85°C (high voltage version).
Decoded clock & direction outputs available.

The timing diagram above is the result of shaft rotation viewed from
the shaft side of the encoder. B leads A in a clockwise shaft rotation,
and A leads B in a counterclockwise shaft rotation.
CPR (N):
The number of Cycles Per Revolution.
One Shaft Rotation:
360 mechanical degrees, N cycles.
One Electrical Degree (°e):
1/360 of one cycle.
One Cycle (C):
360 electrical degrees (°e). Each cycle can be decoded into 1 or 4 codes, referred to as X1 or X4 resolution multiplication.
Symmetry:
A measure of the relationship between (X) & (Y) in electrical degrees, nominally 180°e.
Quadrature (Z):
The phase lag or lead between channels A & B in electrical degrees, nominally 90°e.
Index (CH I.):
The index output goes high once per revolution, coincident with the low states of channels A & B, nominally 1/4 of one cycle (90°e).
Position error:
The difference between the actual shaft position & the position indicated by the encoder cycle count.
Cycle error:
An indication of cycle uniformity. The difference between an observed shaft angle which gives rise to one electrical cycle,
and the nominal angular increment of 1/N of a revolution.

Note:
See
Cables & Connectors
data sheet for more information.
Cable Notes:
When the
HD25
encoder is ordered with a 6 ft. cable already
attached, no connector is provided (longer lengths are available).
The low temperature version cable is considerably more flexible
than the high temperature cable. Because of this, it is recom-
mended over the high temperature cable, except where high
temperature capability is required.
The low voltage (+5V) option is the only option with an operating
temperature that would be compatible with the high temperature
cable.
