An independent harmonic winding is attached to the stator of the generator to draw out the third harmonic voltage, which is rectified by the thyristor
and supplied to the
generator for excitation. Since the harmonic winding output voltage changes with the generator load, the excitation has automatic adjustment. When
the generator load increases and the power factor decreases, the third harmonic winding output voltage increases accordingly; when the generator load decreases and
the power factor increases, the third harmonic winding voltage decreases accordingly. When a short circuit occurs in the power grid, the output voltage of the third harmonic winding
increases greatly, forcing the generator to be excited.
The circuit is shown in Figure 7-43. In the figure, sQ is the harmonic excitation winding.
