Application of TOPSwitch-GX in Switching Power SuppliesAbstract
: TOPSwitch-GX device is a new type of integrated chip combining PWM/MOSFET in one. It uses the same circuit as TOPSwitch, expands the power range of the TOPSwitch series, and integrates many new functions. This paper introduces a closed power supply designed with TOP249Y, which uses the line detection function and external current limiting function of TOPSwitch-GX. The design is novel and has certain practicality. Keywords: TOPSwitch-GX device; line detection; external current limitingSince the 1970s, the rapid development of large-scale integrated circuit technology has made a qualitative leap in switching power supplies, setting off a wave of high-frequency, miniaturization and modularization of power supply products. For switching power supplies below 200W, compared with other circuits, the application of TOPSwitch requires the least components. At present, the volume of switching power supplies is mainly determined by energy storage components such as capacitors, inductors and transformers, while the circuit using TOPSwitch series devices is simple, small, light, complete in self-protection functions, and convenient in design. TOPSwitch-GX uses the same topology circuit as TOPSwitch, integrating high-voltage power MOSFET, pulse width modulation (PWM) controller, fault automatic protection and other control circuits into a monolithic CMOS chip, and increasing the operating frequency to 132kHz. TOPSwitch-GX not only expands the power range of the TOPSwitch series, increasing the maximum power to 250W when the single voltage input is used, but also integrates a number of new functions to reduce system costs and improve design flexibility, performance and efficiency. In addition to the standard drain, source and control electrodes, TOPSwitch-GX in different packages also has 1 to 3 pins. Different configurations of these pins can achieve different functions, including line detection (overvoltage/undervoltage, voltage feedforward/reduced DCmax) and external precise current limiting.
