Nippon Seiko develops steering column with new safety mechanism [Copy link]

Nippon Seiko announced that it has successfully developed a steering column with a new safety mechanism. In the mechanism for adjusting the steering wheel, not only has the adjustability in the up-down (tilt) and front-back (telescopic) directions been improved, but also the steering wheel can be prevented from shifting in the tilt and front-back directions when the vehicle collides, and the position of the steering wheel can be maintained. In addition, the adjustability in the tilt and telescopic directions has been improved.

When the vehicle collides, the steering column will shrink after the driver hits the steering wheel through the airbag, thereby providing a buffering effect for the impact. However, if the tilt and telescopic adjustment mechanism of the steering wheel is not locked sufficiently, the impact force of the vehicle collision will cause the steering wheel to shift, thereby causing the action surface of the airbag to shift, and destroying the stability of absorbing the impact force from the steering wheel.

For this issue, Nippon Seiko developed a new accurate locking mechanism "Wedge Gear" in the tilt and telescopic adjustment mechanism, which meshes with a wedge gear and a V-shaped gear. The locking force of this mechanism is 40% higher than that of the old mechanism, and it can stably maintain the posture of the steering wheel. In addition, the tilt and telescopic adjustment range has been expanded by 20%, making the adjustment process smoother.

In addition, by using aluminum alloy in the steering shaft and magnesium alloy in the bracket, the weight is reduced by 20-30% compared with the old product. This new method is applicable to all vehicles equipped with manual tilt and telescopic adjustment mechanisms.
