High performance electronic ballast system and its dedicated integrated controller [Copy link]

Abstract: This paper discusses the circuit structure and basic principle of power factor correction circuit that must be possessed by high-performance electronic ballast system, and introduces the electronic ballast special integrated controller of MicroLinear Corporation and the high-performance electronic ballast circuit composed of it. According to the State Economic and Trade Commission, my country will take the replacement of incandescent lamps with integrated energy-saving lamps composed of electronic ballasts and compact fluorescent lamps as an important goal of the "green lighting project". During the "Ninth Five-Year Plan", more than 300 million energy-saving lamps will be promoted, forming the ability of terminal power saving of 22 billion degrees, which is equivalent to saving (490-630) billion yuan in power construction funds. After deducting the investment in power saving, it can actually reduce social expenditure by (300-400) billion yuan. According to relevant experts from the Ministry of Information Industry, under the same luminous flux conditions, energy-saving lamps can save 80% of electricity compared with incandescent lamps. The cost of purchasing energy-saving lamps can be recovered in the electricity bill savings of (8-10) months. It is more cost-effective for ordinary families, enterprises, institutions, hotels, restaurants, commercial systems, etc. to use electronic energy-saving lamps than incandescent lamps. However, the old-fashioned inductive ballasts working at power frequency generally have the disadvantages of high energy consumption, low efficiency, large size, and large amount of copper. Therefore, the state has made it a policy to replace traditional inductive ballasts with high-frequency electronic ballasts. At present, some electronic ballasts have appeared on the market. Table 1 lists the performance comparison of these electronic ballasts. According to the International Electrotechnical Commission standard IEC929 and my country's professional standard ZBK74012-90, electronic ballasts should "start the lamp when used under normal circumstances, but not damage the lamp performance"; "the shortest time for applying cathode preheating voltage should be no less than 0.4s" and "the crest factor of open circuit voltage shall not exceed 1.8; during the minimum preheating period, even a very narrow voltage peak that does not affect the effective value shall not be generated", etc., then except for high-end electronic ballasts, all the products listed in Table 1 are unqualified products. It is particularly important to emphasize that as early as 1982, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) formulated the standard called "Standard for Interference of Household Appliances and Similar Electrical Equipment on Power Supply Systems", namely IEC555-2. In 1987, Europe also formulated a similar EN60555-2 standard. Both standards strictly limit the power factor of equipment to be close to 1, and also clearly stipulate that equipment above 300W will not be sold since 1992; equipment below 300W will not be sold since 1994. In view of the great harm caused by low power factor, it is very important and necessary to enforce the regulation that the power factor of electronic equipment and products must be close to 1. Although there is no corresponding standard in China now, it is certain that the introduction of relevant standards is a matter of time. High-performance electronic ballasts are naturally no exception.
