With the gradual popularization of computers in China, EDA (Electronic Design Automatic, circuit design automation) software is becoming more and more widely used in the circuit industry. However, compared with developed countries, there is still a considerable gap in the level of circuit design in China. China has come to the door of the WTO. With the accession of the WTO, the circuit industry will be greatly impacted. Many people engaged in circuit design are not familiar with EDA software. The purpose of this article is to let these colleagues have some understanding of this and improve their level of circuit design using computers. The following are some of the most commonly used EDA software in China.

PROTEL Circuit Automatic Design

  PROTEL is a CAD software for the circuit industry launched by PORTEL in the late 1980s. It deservedly ranks ahead of many EDA software and is the preferred software for circuit designers. It was used earlier in China and has the highest popularity rate. Some colleges and universities have even opened courses to learn it. Almost all circuit companies use it. Early PROTEL was mainly used as a printed board automatic wiring tool, running in the DOS environment, with very low hardware requirements, and could run under 1M memory of a 286 machine without a hard disk. It has fewer functions, only electrical schematic drawing and printed board design functions, and the routing pass rate of printed board automatic wiring is also low. Now PROTEL has developed to PROTEL99 (its beta version can be downloaded on the Internet), which is a huge EDA software with more than 200 MB fully installed. It works in the Windows 95 environment and is a complete all-round circuit design system. It includes electrical schematic drawing, analog circuit and digital circuit mixed signal simulation, multi-layer printed circuit board design (including printed circuit board automatic wiring), programmable logic device design, chart generation, circuit table generation, support for macro operations and other functions, and has a Client/Server (client/server) architecture. It is also compatible with some other design software file formats, such as ORCAD, PSPICE, EXCEL, etc. Using automatic wiring of multi-layer printed circuit boards, a 100% routing pass rate of high-density PCBs can be achieved. Protel for Windows v1.0 sch Circuit schematic automatic design

It is a rare and excellent software.

  Although the version is low, it has powerful functions; it has low requirements for operating system and hardware, and 486 and above models are sufficient; after installation, the file is small, about 4.65MB; the *.pcb format drawing files drawn with it are particularly small, and it has excellent compatibility with other design software, but it does not support the input of Chinese characters. Fortunately, only English characters are usually used on PCB boards. In short, Protel for Windows v1.5 is a rare and excellent software.

ORCAD EDA software

  ORCAD is an EDA software launched by ORCAD in the late 1980s. It is the most widely used EDA software in the world, with millions of circuit engineers using it every day. Compared with other EDA software, its functions are also the most powerful. Since ORCAD software uses a software dog to prevent piracy, it is not popular in China and its popularity is not as good as PROTEL. Only a few circuit designers use it. As early as ORCAD 4.0, which works in the DOS environment, it has integrated functions such as electrical schematic drawing, printed circuit board design, digital circuit simulation, and programmable logic device design, and its interface is friendly and intuitive. Its component library is also the richest among all EDA software, and it has always been the first choice among EAD software in the world. After ORCAD merged with CADENCE in July last year, it became the most powerful company in the world to develop EDA software. Its product ORCAD Century Integrated Edition works in Windows 95 and Windows NT environments, integrating functions such as electrical schematic drawing, printed circuit board design, and mixed simulation of analog and digital circuits. Its circuit simulation component library has reached 8,500, including almost all common circuit component modules. Its powerful functions have led to its high price. PSPICE Circuit Simulation

  PSPICE is one of the earlier EDA software, launched by MICROSIM in 1985. In terms of circuit simulation, its functions can be said to be the most powerful and is widely used in China. PSPICE 6.2 is now widely used, working in Windows environment, occupying more than 20M hard disk space. The entire software consists of several parts such as schematic editing, circuit simulation, stimulus editing, component library editing, waveform diagram, etc. It is a whole when used, but each part has its own window. PSPICE has been incorporated into ORCAD to become ORCAD-PSPICE, but PSPICE is still sold and used separately. The new version is PSPICE 9.1, which works on Windows 9x/NT platform. It requires a Pentium CPU or above, 32M memory, 50M free hard disk space, and 800×600 resolution. It is a powerful analog and digital circuit mixed simulation EDA software. It can perform various circuit simulations, stimulus establishment, temperature and noise analysis, analog control, waveform output, data output, and display analog and digital simulation results in the same window. No matter what kind of device or circuit is simulated, including IGBT, pulse width modulation circuit, analog/digital conversion, digital/analog conversion, etc., accurate simulation results can be obtained. EWB Circuit Simulation

 EWB (ELECTRONICS WORKBENCH EDA) software is an EDA software launched by Interactive Image Technologies Ltd in the early 1990s, but it has only been used in China in recent years. EWB 5.0, which works in Windows 95 environment, is now widely used. Compared with other EDA software, it is a relatively small software with only 16M and relatively simple functions, which is to carry out mixed simulation of analog circuits and digital circuits. But you must not underestimate it. Its simulation function is very powerful, and it can simulate the results of real circuits almost 100%. Moreover, it provides multimeter, oscilloscope, signal generator, sweeper, logic analyzer, digital signal generator, logic converter and other tools on the desktop. Its device library contains transistor components, integrated circuits and digital gate circuit chips of many large companies. Components not in the device library can also be imported from external modules. Among many circuit simulation software, EWB is the easiest to use. Its working interface is very intuitive. The schematic diagram and various tools are in the same window. People who have never used it can use it very skillfully after a little learning. For circuit designers, it is an excellent EDA tool. You can get the results of many circuits without using a soldering iron, and if you want to replace components or change component parameters, you only need to click the mouse. It can also be used as an auxiliary teaching software for electrical knowledge. It can be used to see the output waveforms of various circuits directly on the screen. EWB has good compatibility. Its file format can be exported into a format that can be read by ORCAD or PROTEL. The software is only available in English. Some of its icons will shift two positions under the Chinese version of Windows 98 (normal under Windows 95), but it does not affect its use. It is one of the author's favorite EDA software (the software is introduced in detail in the 15th edition of the 34th issue of 1999).

VISIO Chart Making

 Many people think that VISIO is not an EDA software, but I have used it to make all the single-chip program flow charts, circuit test flow charts and process flow charts for many years, so I think it is also half an EDA software. It is a software for making charts launched by VISIO in 1991. In the early days, it was mainly used for commercial chart making. Later, with the continuous improvement of the version, many new functions were added. VISIO 4.0 is already a multi-functional flowchart making software. After entering China, it is very popular among software workers. Now the most commonly used in China is VISIO 5.0 working in Windows 95 environment, and the full installation capacity is nearly 100MB. Its interface is very friendly and the operation is also very simple, but it has powerful functions and can draw various flow charts. It is not limited to the fields of business, software industry and circuit design, but also an indispensable tool for all software designers. The flow charts that can be made with it include circuit flow charts, process flow charts, program flow charts, organizational charts, business marketing charts, office layout charts, orientation charts... Microsoft's OFFICE 97 has integrated the components of VISIO 4.0. VISIO has recently launched VISIO 2000, which is divided into standard version, technical version, professional version and enterprise version. WINBOARD, WINDRAFT and IVEX-SPICE Electrical schematic drawing and printed circuit board design software

  WINDRAFT and WINBOARD are electrical schematic drawing and printed circuit board design software launched by IVEX in 1994. Since it was launched later, it worked on the Windows platform from the beginning. Its file is very small. The installation disks of WINDRAFT and WINBOARD are two floppy disks. WINDRAFT is used for electrical schematic drawing, and WINBOARD is used for printed circuit board design. Their interfaces are intuitive and friendly, and you can learn to operate them quickly. However, their functions are not large. When designing printed circuit boards, WINBOARD can only be wired manually. However, due to their easy learning and use, some circuit designers still use it. IVEX has also continuously upgraded its software since then. On November 30, 1999, it upgraded WINDRAFT to WINDRAFT 3.03 version and launched the IVEX-SPICE β test version. WINDRAFT 3.03 is still a small software, less than 5M, while IVEX-SPICE is 22M. It is a circuit simulation software that works on Windows 9x/NT platform and requires 8M memory of P-166.
