Philips, Nokia, China Mobile and EZ-Card jointly deploy China's first NFC trial in Xiamen
100 Chinese consumers experience the convenience of NFC mobile payment in Xiamen
2006-06-28

Royal Philips Electronics ( Nasdaq: PHG, AEX: PHI) recently announced that it has launched a near field communication (NFC) trial in Xiamen with Nokia, China Mobile Xiamen Branch, and Xiamen EZ-Link Card. 100 selected testers will use Nokia 3220 mobile phones to process secure electronic payment transactions in any restaurant, transportation system, cinema or convenience store that accepts Xiamen EZ-Link Card. This cooperation not only demonstrates Philips Semiconductor's leadership in NFC technology, but also is the best verification to promote the popularization of this technology in China.

According to a recent report released by China's Ministry of Information Industry, there were more than 377 million mobile phone users in China by the end of September 2005. Among all the emerging mobile phone applications, payment via mobile phone is the most popular and anticipated function among consumers.

Li Er, Senior Vice President and Regional Executive Officer of Philips Semiconductors Greater China, said: "Philips' NFC technology enables consumers to make secure payments, purchase public transportation tickets, and access entertainment, information and services on the go. We are very pleased to work with these important manufacturers in the industry to bring these services to consumers in Xiamen, China. This test fully demonstrates the high recognition of Philips Semiconductors' NFC technology by leading operators and mobile phone manufacturers, and Chinese users will also benefit from NFC technology and enjoy the convenient lifestyle it brings."

In the test, in addition to using the secure mobile payment function, users can also read the balance of the EasyPass card and check the latest 9 historical transactions through the mobile phone screen, which makes it easy for consumers to check their spending. In addition, users can also browse a built-in WAP site to check the range of merchants that accept EasyPass cards and the product information that consumers are interested in.

About NFC

About Near Field Communication ( NFC):

NFC technology was jointly developed by Philips and Sony and is derived from contactless identification (RFID) and wireless short-range communication interconnection technology between mobile devices, consumer electronics, PCs, and smart devices. NFC provides a simple, touch-based solution that allows consumers to exchange information and access content and services in a direct way.

NFC integrates contactless reader, contactless card and peer-to-peer functions into a single chip, creating countless new opportunities for consumers' lifestyles. It is an open interface platform that can quickly and actively set up wireless networks, and is also a virtual connector that serves existing cellular networks, Bluetooth and wireless 802.11 devices.

NFC is compatible with Sony's FeliCa ? cards as well as the widely used contactless smart card architecture based on ISO 14443 A for Philips' MIFARE? technology.

In order to promote the development and popularization of NFC, Philips, Sony and Nokia created a non-profit industry association NFC Forum to promote the implementation and standardization of NFC technology and ensure collaboration between devices and services. Currently, the NFC Forum has more than 70 members worldwide , including MasterCard International, Renesas Technology, Microsoft, Motorola, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, Texas Instruments and Visa International.
