Can the lost humanity be restored? (Speech by Li Ka-shing)

Dear school directors, school leaders, distinguished guests, teachers and students: When I was little, I wanted to be a doctor. I also thought about being a university professor instead of an entrepreneur. You may not know how many times I have thought about how my life would be if I had the opportunity to go to university like you. So I envy you very much, because my dream is your reality, and I am very happy that Shantou University has connected us today. We live in an era full of contradictions. What does globalization represent? It is a world of diversity and unity. Every aspect of our lives - economic, social, cultural, technological, etc. - is changing at an accelerating pace. However, this high-speed express train seems to have no terminal. No one on the train knows where to go. Globalization is such a large-scale business and financial activity that in a boardroom, value can be created or investment can be written off for a place on the other side of the world. Can a balance sheet reflect the true value of business? Today, global information has explosive power. We can convey information, but can we convey meaning? Change has become the essence of human life. No one can be frozen in the past. In this melee of pursuing efficiency and maximizing benefits, life can become very ruthless and human nature can be very lost. We have to be one step ahead every day. There is no time to stop and think about what kind of new paradigm is needed to face the challenges of economic imbalance, environmental destruction, human dignity and peace? We often say that humans are the spirit of all things and the core energy of all development. We have the ability to do good and evil, to create and destroy. In order to pursue progress, we constantly improve our competitiveness. This is right. The essence of education is to make us move forward. Today, with the advancement of science and technology, there are constant breakthroughs in communications, medicine, life sciences, etc. We have more knowledge, but not necessarily more intelligence; we can grasp the causes of things, but we cannot predict the future. Aren’t all the predicaments in today’s society created by humans? So we must reflect on whether the loss of human nature can be restored? I personally believe that this can be done through education. The goal of education is to spread knowledge, inspire thinking, pursue intelligence, and improve personality. We live in society and need to interact with society, learn how to get along with ourselves and others. We need to have empathy, be able to put ourselves in other people's shoes, and open our hearts to understand the thoughts and ideas of people from different cultures and races around the world. Only in this way can we transcend race, gender, age, culture and other barriers. We should not only work hard to improve ourselves, but also strive to establish common dignity in society. Otherwise, it will be a distant hope for us to live in harmony with each other in the process of globalization. Dear students, maybe you think that your most precious contribution to others today is your love, but in the future, you will know that your most precious contribution is actually your commitment. Shantou University is my commitment beyond life. Today, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to say to you that Shantou University welcomes every worker who is willing to contribute to the advancement of China's education, and every student who is determined to become a pillar of society and has a sense of responsibility for society! Thank you
all. Excerpted from: Li Ka Shing Foundation
