Tensilica Corporation has announced that the Xtensa HiFi 2 audio engine is driving high-quality 24-bit audio processing in NVIDIA's recently introduced GoForce 5500 handheld graphics processing unit (GPU) . The NVIDIA GoForce 5500 brings mobile digital TV, high-speed burst photography, console-like 3D graphics, and high-fidelity surround sound to mobile phones. Phones based on the NVIDIA GoForce 5500 handheld GPU are expected to be available from all major handset manufacturers before the 2006 holiday season. The Xtensa HiFi 2 audio engine is a value-added solution on Tensilica's proven Xtensa LX configurable processor core, optimized and customized for current consumer audio functions. As a complete low-power solution, the Xtensa HiFi 2 audio engine allows SoC design engineers to design devices that include audio functions, such as mobile devices, portable music players, DVD players, and set-top boxes. Compared with the current popular 16-bit audio processors, this 24-bit embedded audio processor has inherent advantages. Due to the improved accuracy of intermediate calculation values in compression and decompression algorithms, it can provide higher sound quality for compressed files. And the 24-bit audio processor supports all popular audio standards . Tensilica and its application software partners also provide a wide range of software encoders and decoders to support all popular audio standards, including AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate Voice), Dolby Digital AC-3, QSound Labs' microQ, MP3, MPEG-2/4 AAC LC and AAC PlusTM, WMA (Windows Media Audio), Sonic's Embedded Audio Synthesis (EAS), and SRS WOW XT and Xspace 3D, etc. Since the Xtensa LX processor core with HiFi 2 audio engine is fully programmable, multiple audio standards can run on the same hardware, so that the same chip can be used for multiple applications, or the same device can play or record audio signals of different standards. And while processing audio, other functions such as control, video, etc. can be completed.
