For automotive applications, Linear Technology launches 80μA quiescent current step-down DC/DC controller [Copy link]

Linear Technology has introduced the LTC3835, a step-down DC/DC synchronous controller with very low quiescent current . In sleep mode, the LTC3835 draws only 80μA, making it ideal for saving battery energy in applications such as car navigation or battery-powered monitoring equipment (in these devices, the system remains semi-operating when the engine or power supply is turned off).

The LTC3835's 4V to 36V input supply voltage range is sufficient to protect the device from high input voltage transients and continue to operate under cold car cranking conditions. The LTC3835 has an internal ±1% reference that can provide output voltages from 0.8V to 10V, making it ideal for higher voltage power supplies required for general audio systems, analog tuners, and CD/DVD players. The controller can deliver up to 20A of load current at up to 95% efficiency. The LTC3835 is rated for operation over a -40°C to 85°C temperature range with a maximum operating junction temperature of 125°C.

The LTC3835's constant frequency, current mode architecture provides excellent line and load regulation. The IC smoothly ramps up the output voltage at startup with adjustable soft-start and tracking. The operating frequency is adjustable from 250kHz to 550kHz and can be synchronized to an external clock from 140kHz to 650kHz. The device also integrates output overvoltage and overcurrent (short circuit) protection circuits.

The LTC3835 version provides multi-phase (PolyPhase) operation for current sharing between multiple ICs to provide higher output current. The LTC3835 is available in 20-lead TSSOP and 4mm×5mm QFN packages, while the LTC3835-1 version is available in smaller 16-pin SSOP and 5mm×3mm DFN packages. Pricing starts at $3.40 per piece in 1,000-piece quantities. A summary of the LTC3835's performance is as follows:

·80uA low quiescent current (no load output)
·Wide output voltage range from 0.8V to 10V
·0uA shutdown current
·Adjustable or phase-lockable switching frequency
·Output overvoltage and overcurrent protection
