TPMS with two-way communication [Copy link]

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is mainly used to monitor tire pressure in real time while the car is driving, and to alarm when the tire is low or leaking, to ensure driving safety.
There are two types of TPMS. One is the indirect TPMS (Wheel-Speed Based TPMS, WSB TPMS for short), which compares the speed difference between tires through the car's ABS wheel speed sensor to achieve the purpose of monitoring tire pressure. Its disadvantage is that it cannot judge when more than two tires are deflated at the same time or when the speed exceeds 100km/h.
The other is direct TPMS (Pressure-Sensor Based TPMS, PSB TPMS for short), which uses the sensor module installed inside the tire to directly measure the tire's internal air pressure, temperature, module power supply voltage and other parameters, and sends the measurement data to the central receiving module wirelessly to achieve the purpose of monitoring. When a problem occurs, the system will automatically alarm. Obviously, PSB TPMS is superior to WSB TPMS in terms of function and performance.
At present, most direct TPMS are one-way systems, that is, there is only a one-way information path from the tire electronic module to the receiver, and the tire module works in a completely autonomous mode. When the tire module detects changes in tire pressure/temperature or abnormalities, it sends information to the receiver, but it cannot ensure that the receiver can correctly receive this information.
In addition to one-way communication, a two-way communication TPMS has been developed. Two-way communication means that the system's remote sensing sensor and RF transceiver module respond to the status report request sent by the RF transceiver and information processing module in the vehicle body, and immediately report the current working status of the tire to the RF transceiver and information processing module in the vehicle body. The remote sensing sensor and RF transceiver module have wireless RF transceiver function, are always in standby state, and unconditionally accept the command of the RF transceiver and information processing module in the vehicle body.
Results of the search from the European Patent Office (EPO): As of November 1, 2005, three relevant patents were found in the Worldwide database using "bidirectional", "tire" and "pressure" (Keyword(s) in title or abstract) as the combined keywords.

Patent US2005163063 "Configuration and method for bidirectional transmission of signals in a motor vehicle" relates to a TPMS using a transceiver, the structure of which includes a control unit; a first transmitter triggered by the control unit, the transmitter sends an inquiry signal; a first receiver remotely connected to the first transmitter is ready to respond to the inquiry signal; a second transmitter connected to the first receiver, the transmitter sends a response signal; a second receiver remotely connected to the second transmitter receives the response signal and forwards it to the control unit. A data line connects the speed generator and the control unit, and the trigger signal of the inquiry signal is a function of the vehicle speed, which is usually easier to trigger at high speed than at low speed.
Patent US2004113765 "Passive keyless entry device for monitoring tire pneumatic pressure by bidirectional communication" includes an on-board device installed on a car, and a keyless portable device and a transceiver for monitoring the tire pressure of the car. The on-board device includes a low-frequency signal sending part that sends a low-frequency inquiry signal to the portable device and the transceiver, a receiving part that receives a high-frequency response signal sent from the portable device and the transceiver, and a controller that controls the operation of the door lock mechanical system.
Patent DE10221331 "Dynamic internal pressure and temperature measuring device for automobile tires uses transceiver attached to automobile body adjacent each wheel for bidirectional communication with sensor within tire" has a sensor in each tire that communicates with a transceiver on the body of the automobile. The transceiver is connected to the tire antenna on one side and to the controller and evaluation device on the other side. The transceiver has an AM/PM device, and the input is connected to the transceiver and the controller.
In China, only the TPMS-1209 produced by Suzhou Shiant Automotive Electronics Co., Ltd. adopts two-way communication technology ( http://mmt.auto-a.hc360.com/merchant/show/099/m2955099.htm ). Apart from this, only a few research papers and introductory articles focus on TPMS with two-way communication [References 1, 2, 3].
Among foreign companies, GE's TPMS equipped with NPX series sensors can complete two-way communication functions.
Philips' P2SC TPMS solution also has this function
Siemens' Tire IQ System was developed in collaboration with Goodyear and enables two-way communication and no battery required.
In addition to complete TPMS, Melexis has developed two new ASK/FSK/FM RF transceiver ICs, TH7122 and TH71221, with two-way communication capabilities, TPMS being one of its target applications.

To be honest, this function doesn't seem to have any practical significance.
