A Swiss startup called Flappie made its debut at CES 2024 today, showcasing an interesting pet accessory product that can prevent cats from bringing mice home.

It is reported that this is an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled cat door that will automatically lock if the kitten tries to bring back captured prey from outside.

On the outward-facing side of the door, the AI Cat Door has a motion sensor and night vision camera. Flappie says the company has compiled a “unique and proprietary” dataset that focuses on diversity — it can detect different species of cats and prey, and film in a variety of different lighting conditions.

Additionally, there are some manual switches on the inside of the door that allow users to manually lock and unlock the cat door, as well as turn off the prey detection system.

Flappie said pets are thus trained not to enter when carrying something, and when they drop their prey, the door opens immediately.

According to Engadget, a co-founder of Flappie admitted that a clever cat might find a way to put down the mouse, open the door, and then pick up the mouse and run in. The company also said that the accuracy of its artificial intelligence detection system is over 90%. In other words, there is still a small chance that the mouse will get in.

Flappie has also built a chip detection feature into its cat door. So if the pet has been implanted with a microchip, the user can set the cat door to open only for that specific pet. The cat door can also be controlled via a mobile app.

Flappie plans to launch the cat door in Switzerland and Germany later this spring, and plans to expand to other regions after scaling up production. IT Home has not yet found the price information.

It's possible. At least I've seen cats born to the same parents look almost the same.

The difficulty lies in the fact that infrared has to be used in dark environments, and the image quality is not very good, making recognition quite difficult.
