【EETALK】Let’s talk about the impact of temperature on battery consumption [Copy link]

At 7 o'clock this morning, my sister QQed me like crazy. I thought it was something wrong, but she told me that her phone battery was not working well. After a night of sleep, it had lost 10% of its power when she woke up in the morning. So I started to complain that it was not my personal problem, but the battery of Xiaomi phone was not working well (my sister and I have the same phone), and the temperature resistance was too poor, which was why I always turned on the power saving mode.

When I was chatting with my sister, I also found that there were group messages on QQ early in the morning. I took a look and saw that several people were complaining about the problem of crazy battery drain.

Hey, why are so many people suddenly complaining about battery drain today?

Oh. Let me tell you about the environment. The temperature has dropped drastically! It’s super cold! My face is so stiff after I went out~~

The reason why the battery is losing power so fast is also related to the temperature. So my advice to my sister is to warm up the phone in bed. This is how I explained it to my sister: the phone is frozen in the cold weather, so it needs to emit some heat to keep itself warm, so it uses power to keep itself warm, so your battery is losing power so fast. . .

How's the weather over there? Is your phone running out of battery?

Can anyone tell us in detail the impact of temperature on battery consumption?

Now there seems to be a technology that can protect the battery from being in a low temperature state. The battery will heat itself

Huh? This is the first time I've heard of this. I'm curious, how does the automatic heating work? Is it a temperature test that triggers when a certain temperature is reached? How does it heat?  Details Published on 2023-2-27 13:55

Mobile phone batteries don’t have this technology, right?

I remember that overheating will increase the current. Too cold seems to reduce the activity of the battery, but I don't know how much the power consumption will increase.

When measuring power consumption before, I disassembled the chip and blew it with a hot air gun. I measured the power consumption right after the hot air gun was used. The current was relatively large. After a while, the circuit board cooled down and the current dropped.

Yes, the battery temperature cannot be low when the weather is cold. This technology should be quite difficult.  Details Published on 2023-2-28 09:11

Effect of temperature on charge and discharge performance of lithium-ion batteries

1. If the temperature drops, the reaction rate inside the lithium-ion battery will decrease, and the power output of the battery will also decrease; if the temperature rises, the opposite is true, that is, the output power of the lithium-ion battery will increase.

2. However, if the temperature is too high, exceeding 60°C, it will destroy the chemical balance in the battery and cause side reactions. The performance of the rechargeable battery material will degrade at high temperatures and the battery cycle life will be greatly shortened.

3. Under the ever-changing environmental factors, the ambient temperature has a greater impact on the charge and discharge performance of the battery, because the electrochemical reaction at the electrode/electrolyte interface is related to the ambient temperature. The electrode/electrolyte can be called the heart of the battery; when the temperature drops, the reaction rate of the electrode will decrease.

Temperature changes directly affect the discharge performance and capacity of lithium-ion batteries. When the temperature drops, the internal resistance of the battery increases, the electrochemical reaction rate slows down, the polarization internal resistance increases rapidly, and the battery discharge capacity and discharge platform decrease, affecting the output of battery power and energy.

Many battery users are not aware that consumer-grade lithium-ion batteries cannot be charged below 0°C. Although the battery pack appears to be charging normally, metallic lithium plating may occur on the anode during the low-temperature charging process. This plating is permanent and will not be eliminated with the charging cycle. If exposed to vibration or other stress conditions, lithium-ion batteries are more likely to fail. Advanced chargers can prevent lithium-ion batteries from charging below freezing temperatures.

Regarding lithium-ion batteries, the discharge capacity drops sharply under low temperature conditions, but the discharge capacity is not lower than that at room temperature under high temperature, and sometimes it is slightly higher than the capacity at room temperature. The important thing is that the migration speed of lithium ions is accelerated under high temperature, and the lithium electrode does not decompose or form hydrogen at high temperature like nickel electrodes and hydrogen storage electrodes, causing the capacity to decrease.

When the battery module is discharged at low temperature, as the discharge progresses, heat is generated due to resistance and other reasons, causing the battery temperature to rise, which is manifested as a voltage increase. As the discharge progresses, the voltage gradually decreases.

The best operating temperature for lithium-ion batteries is 0~35℃. Low temperature will reduce the activity of lithium ions, weaken the battery discharge capacity, and shorten the service life. If the lithium-ion battery is in a low temperature environment for a short time, this damage is only temporary and will not damage the battery capacity. When the temperature rises, the performance will recover.
