On the 4th local time, the European Parliament overwhelmingly passed a bill requiring single mobile phones and other portable smart electronic devices to have charging ports. This means that Apple will have to completely abandon the "ancestral" Lightning interface and switch to the USB-C interface by the end of 2024 at the latest.
According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the latest issue of the PowerOn column also released relevant signals. ADCDAC predicts that Apple will replace the following six major Apple products by 2024: AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Magic Keyboard.
In fact, in June this year, the European Union issued a statement that by the fall of 2024, USB Type-C will become the universal charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU, and laptops must comply with the regulations within 40 months after the bill comes into effect.
According to the proposal, all consumer electronic products sold within the EU, including touch screen controllers, including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, digital cameras, headphones, earphones, portable game consoles, and Bluetooth audio, must uniformly adopt the USB-C specification. Only some sports equipment such as smart watches and health trackers may not be regulated. Later legislation will
After the bill comes into effect, mobile phones, tablets and other electronic devices must uniformly adopt USB-C charging specifications before the fall of 2024. Laptops have long idle time, so manufacturers can be changed within 40 months after the bill comes into effect.
The EU comprehensive charging specification is believed to effectively reduce electronic waste from the source, extend product sustainability, and reduce unnecessary expenses. Due to the new instructions, Apple has to abandon the Lighting interface and adopt the more universal Type-C interface. This will cause Apple to lose the source of high recognition profits.
However, when the proposal was first proposed, it was opposed by Apple, which warned that the proposal would harm innovation and create a large amount of electronic waste.

The Lightning interface, which was born in 2012, is also considered an innovation. However, with the rapid development of data transmission technology today, the transmission rate of the Lightning interface is only at the level of USB 2.0. In terms of transmission efficiency, it is lower than that of USB 3.0 devices. Theoretically, the maximum transmission rate of USB 3.0 is 480Mbps, and USB 2.0 is the highest. In addition, the charging power of USB 3.0 interface models is higher and the charging speed is faster.
Despite this, Apple still insists that the USB-C interface is larger than the Lightning interface, takes up space, may hinder product innovation, and should be left to the market to choose freely.
Tony Fadell, former vice president of Apple and creator of the iPod, expressed his support for the EU's new regulations on social media, saying, "Apple is not a problem." He also pointed out that from a technical perspective, there is no reason for Apple to refuse, unless they stand on the position of a monopoly and hinder continuous innovation.
For users, the passage of the directive means that products such as iPhones and AirPods released thereafter will no longer require separate wires, greatly saving space and costs.
For traditional Apple accessory companies, the new restrictions will inevitably be a shock because the manufacturing threshold for Apple accessories may be lowered. But the benefit is that even without paying high licensing and certification fees, the production cost of Apple components will be greatly reduced in the future.
