Profile

LED lighting is an important feature in today's and future automotive designs. LED lighting is characterized by its efficiency, robustness, attractiveness and artistic effect. LED lighting is used in many different ways in cars, such as high- and low-beam headlights, daytime running lights, indicator lights, brake lights, dashboard displays, head-up displays and a growing variety of other interior and exterior features illumination. These designs require LED drivers that can accurately, efficiently and reliably drive LED light strings. For such applications, multiple power levels are required as well as other features such as brightness control and EMI reduction.

Linear Technology's LT®3952 is a versatile 60V LED driver that is easy to use in different DC/DC converter topologies. The device features a powerful 4A internal low-side MOSFET that helps deliver up to 25W of power from a typical automotive battery (or even more in some cases). It can be used as a boost converter for LEDs up to 54V or as a boost and buck converter to power a string of LEDs at voltages over a wide automotive LED string voltage range . LTC's high-end PWM dimming provides accurate and deep brightness control for LEDs. The LED string's short-circuit and open-circuit protection and diagnostics make it a robust and very useful boost, buck, or boost and buck LED driver.

The LT3952 has a pseudo-random spread spectrum function that can be used to reduce average EMI without causing flicker during PWM dimming. Additionally, it can be configured in a patent-pending boost-buck topology to achieve low input and output ripple and reduce EMI in both boost and buck applications. It is a versatile, powerful and rugged LED driver IC suitable for many automotive LED driver applications.
