This automatic bathroom fan controller circuit design is a light and fan motor control with delayed shutoff. This automatic fan control is commonly used in toilets and bathrooms. When switch S1 is closed, the fan motor and light turn on. When switch S1 is open (closed), the light turns off, but the fan motor will continue to run for 3, 6, or 12 minutes (set by S2). This delayed shutoff of the fan ensures that unwanted odors are truly fanned out of the toilet.

The heart of the bathroom exhaust fan circuit is the SAB0529 IC. It is a programmable extended time timer marketed by Siemens. This IC is programmable from 1 second to 31.5 hours. The IC achieves this extended time capacity by using the power line frequency as its time base.


Bathroom fan light control circuits are often used to control inductive loads, such as in the case of fan motors. Therefore, current synchronization is necessary. This is done with resistor R6. In addition, capacitor C1 is connected between pins 2 and 15. This capacitor sets the pulse length at output pin 16. If you decide to use a different triac, you will need to change the value of R5.

This resistor sets the trigger current level, in this case 5mA. Syc resistor R6 must also be changed. If the triac power and holding current (Ih) are known, the value of R6 can be obtained from the following table:
