Stepper motors are ideal for low-torque applications that require precise position control. That being said, when choosing a stepper motor for your design application, what factors should be considered when selecting the number of steps per revolution and the step angle?


First of all, there is a certain relationship between the number of steps per revolution of a stepper motor and the step angle. These parameter values ​​can be filtered from our stepper motor screening conditions.

Number of steps per revolution = 360°/step angle

For example, the stepper motor QSH4218-35-10-027 from TRINAMIC Motion Control GmbH has a step angle of 1.8°. So its number of steps per revolution = 360 / 1.8 = 200. This is a fixed relationship - a stepper motor with a step angle of 1.8⁰ will have 200 steps per revolution. When choosing a stepper motor, you only need to select one of the two parameters, the number of steps per revolution or the step angle, and you don't need to select both.

A higher number of steps per revolution indicates that the stepper motor is able to move in smaller increments, allowing for more precise control of its position.

Keep in mind that the more steps per revolution a stepper motor has, the lower its speed and the lower its torque. Therefore, when searching for a high-precision stepper motor, you must consider the speed and torque output required for your application.
