We sometimes describe certain music as "rich in color" or "full of light and shadow." In the world of classical music, this is especially true of the works of Debussy and Ravel. But conversely, do different colors produce different sounds?

Modern technology seems to be able to answer this question and has conducted successful "human experiments".

Artist Neil Harbisson suffers from color blindness, and it is a severe color blindness that can only see black and white. However, after implanting a special music chip he developed in his brain, he can now "hear" other colors. This is from the "color input recognition device for the surrounding world" that he has been developing since 2004: a small camera on his body can read different colors and convert the judgment results into vibrations and send them to his inner ear.

Because it involves implanting a voice IC into his skull, Harbison spent a year convincing surgeons to perform surgery on him to install the system. Now he can also connect the music chip via wifi or Bluetooth, so he can "hear" the appearance of objects from the wireless device.

"I've been 'listening' to colour for eight years, since 2004, so I don't think this is strange," he said at the TED conference in 2012. "At first I had to remember the 'name' of each colour, so I had to remember the sounds that represented them, but after a while, it became a simple reception without much thought."

“Hearing colours has completely changed my life because the world is full of colours, so things like going to an art gallery have become new experiences, for example, I can hear Picasso. The process of seeing paintings is like going to a concert in a concert hall, because I can hear the paintings. I also found it very scary in supermarkets, walking around and listening, it’s like being in a nightclub.”

Over the years, many composers have had this ability to "hear colors," which is called "synesthesia." Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, and Sibelius have all described specific tonality as having a certain "color" or "mood."
