Recently, technical experts from Hesai Technology represented China in the 2023 Annual Meeting of the International Organization for Standardization Road Vehicle Committee Electrical, Electronic Components and Common Systems Subcommittee (ISO/TC22/SC32) held in London, UK1, and reported to the delegates on the results of the preliminary research work on the global ISO standard for automotive lidar.
At this meeting, the standardization preliminary research work related to the three automotive lidar PWI (Preliminary Work Item) projects led by China (including ISO/PWI 13228 "Road Vehicle LiDAR Test Methods") was unanimously recognized by all countries, and the committee agreed to initiate further voting.
Regarding the three pre-research projects of ISO/PWI 13228, ISO/PWI 13389 and ISO/PWI 13377, this meeting discussed and resolved as follows:
1. If the NP (New work item proposal) of IS 13228 and IS 13389 and the CIB (Committee internal ballot) of TR 13377 are approved, SC32 supports the new projects IS 13228, IS 13389 and TR 13377.
2. If any of the three projects, IS 13228, IS 13389 and TR 13377, is approved, SC32 agrees to merge the three AHGs to form a new WG.
Outstanding results of pre-research work have been recognized internationally
The core purpose of the ISO/PWI 13228 "Test methods for road vehicle lidar" standard is to provide standardized vehicle-mounted lidar performance descriptions for countries around the world, standardize the test methods for key performance of vehicle-mounted lidar, guide countries to conduct more standardized management of the vehicle-mounted lidar market, and reach a consensus on the definition of vehicle-mounted lidar terminology and technical specifications.
At the beginning of last year, the ISO international standard pre-research working group AHG12 for automotive laser radar, led by China, was established and started pre-research work. Experts from Hesai served as the group leader, and experts from China Automotive Technology and Research Center and Valeo served as deputy group leaders. It attracted 41 experts from 8 countries to participate in the pre-research work. After one and a half years of pre-research and 8 key meetings, AHG1 finally determined the scope, framework and draft of the new version of the ISO/PWI 13228 project and applied to enter the next stage.
This not only means that Hesai has played a leading role in the global standardization of automotive parts, but also consolidated China's international dominance in the field of automotive lidar.
Leading the construction of LiDAR standardization at home and abroad
LiDAR is an essential sensor for high-level autonomous vehicles. As the market scale becomes larger and larger, the implementation of industry standards and specifications will become a strong support for large-scale production and delivery, and will also effectively promote the healthy and orderly development of the industry.
As one of the earliest companies in China to enter the R&D of autonomous driving LiDAR, Hesai has deep technical accumulation in core LiDAR fields such as laser, mechanics, electronics, and software. It has more than 400 authorized patents, more than 700 patents under application, and more than 1,000 patents worldwide. Hesai is also one of the earliest companies to develop its own LiDAR transceiver chips. The chip-based long-range ultra-high-definition LiDAR AT128 has delivered more than 100,000 units to OEM customers, becoming a benchmark product in the industry.
Against the backdrop of the rapid development of intelligent connected vehicles in China, Hesai has been committed to promoting the regularization and standardization of automotive LiDARs at home and abroad, providing an important reference benchmark for future pre-installation mass production cooperation between automobile OEMs and LiDAR manufacturers.
Internationally, in addition to leading ISO international standards on behalf of China, Hesai Technology initiated the UL4700 standard proposal (including lidar functional safety, cybersecurity, expected functional safety and electrical machinery safety) in February 2020 and successfully incorporated it into the US national standard. In February 2022, Hesai also joined the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC TC76 Standards Committee on behalf of China, and actively participated in the discussion, update and formulation of the IEC 60825 optical radiation safety series standards... Hesai continues to be active in the international arena of automotive standardization and has made a series of remarkable progress.
In China, Hesai Technology became a member of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Optical Radiation Safety and Laser Equipment (SAC/TC284) in 2019. Under the guidance of the Electronics and Electromagnetic Compatibility Subcommittee of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Automobiles (SAC/TC114/SC29), Hesai, as the lead unit and Baidu as the co-lead unit, jointly took charge of the drafting of GB/T "Performance Requirements and Test Methods for Automotive LiDAR", and worked with more than 30 industry-leading companies and institutions to promote the implementation of my country's automotive LiDAR standards.
In the future, under the leadership of the China Automotive Standardization Technical Committee, Hesai will continue to make full use of its first-mover advantage in the field of lidar, work closely with industry experts, deeply participate in the formulation of domestic and international standards in the automotive field, and make more contributions to further enhance China's voice in international automotive standards and regulations.
1 ISO is the abbreviation of International Organization for Standardization
2 ISO has 249 technical committees (TCs). The technical committee directly related to the automotive industry is TC22 (Technical Committee for Road Vehicles). SC32 is the sub-technical committee for vehicle electrical, electronic components and general systems. Its work scope covers typical technical specifications for electronic and electrical systems and components. AHG1 (Adhoc Group) is one of the working groups.
