Samsung Display is considering manufacturing thin-film transistors (TFTs) for use in Micro LED TVs manufactured by Samsung Electronics.
According to THE ELEC, sources said that Samsung Display has formed a special team to be responsible for this project, which is code-named "M". Samsung Display's move is aimed at complying with Samsung Electronics' request. Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics made a request to it for the production of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFTs required for Micro LED TVs.
At present, most LED backlight sources use printed circuit boards (PCBs) and flexible printed circuit boards (FPCs) as backplane materials. For small and medium-sized LED backlight panels, glass backplanes using LTPS TFTs have more advantages than PCBs.
It is reported that Samsung Electronics is planning to apply LTPS TFT to smaller-sized Micro LED TV models.
The source pointed out that for the Micro LED LTPS TFT production process, a total of 24 masks are expected to be required. Usually, the sixth-generation OLED substrate requires 11 to 12 masks. More masks means a more complicated production process.
Initially, Samsung Electronics had asked Taiwan panel maker AUO to manufacture LTPS TFTs. However, the company found it difficult to secure a stable supply of TFTs through the deal, so Samsung Electronics changed its strategy and turned to Samsung Display.
Sources said that when Samsung Electronics made this request to Samsung Display, it also asked the latter to extend the production time of liquid crystal panels (LCD) panels.
In addition, Samsung Electronics also told Samsung Display that it is willing to accept the quantum dot (QD)-OLED panels that the latter is developing. This proposal makes it difficult for Samsung Display to refuse this request because QD-OLED commercial production is imminent and customer support is needed.
Sources said Samsung expects to ship about 400-500 Micro LED TVs this year. This is 0.001% of the 49.27 million TVs shipped last year.
Samsung launched its Micro LED TV, the 146-inch “the Wall,” in 2018. Last year, the company launched a 110-inch version for the domestic market.
