The cobalt-free battery installed on the vehicle for the first time is the 115Ah product launched at the previous online press conference of Honeycomb Energy. It has an energy density of ≥235Wh/kg and a cycle number of 2,500 times. It is equipped with the VDA355 module this time.

Honeycomb Energy has successfully completed the installation of the first test prototype vehicle using cobalt-free batteries and officially started road testing.

The cobalt-free battery installed on the vehicle for the first time is the 115Ah product launched at the online press conference of Honeycomb Energy on May 18. It has an energy density of ≥235Wh/kg and a cycle number of 2,500 times. It is equipped with the VDA355 module this time.

According to CATL's plan, the product will be launched on the market in June 2021 and can be installed on most of the current new pure electric platforms.

The scarcity of cobalt resources will seriously threaten the supply chain security of the global development of electric vehicles. Reducing the use of cobalt in batteries has become a consensus in the industry, and cobalt-free batteries have become a future development trend.

As the first company in China to publicly announce the development of cobalt-free materials and battery products, Honeycomb Energy has mainly adopted three key technologies to break through the bottleneck of cobalt-free technology, namely cation doping technology, single crystal technology and nano-network coating.

In the industrialization of cobalt-free materials, Honeycomb Energy has developed cobalt-free materials with targeted performance that can reach the same level as NCM811, reducing material costs by 5-15%. The corresponding battery cell BOM cost can be reduced by about 5%. The cobalt-free materials that have been successfully rolled off the ton-level pilot production line have entered the mass production stage.

In the industrialization of cobalt-free batteries, Honeycomb's idea is that stacking and cobalt-free can meet the requirements of power batteries for cost, efficiency, power, life, etc. Stacking and cobalt-free are fundamental future trends from the perspective of process manufacturing and material cost and safety.

Honeycomb Energy believes that one problem with the industrialization of cobalt-free batteries is the high internal resistance, and if the stacking process is adopted, the internal resistance can be reduced by 5%. The combination of stacking technology and cobalt-free materials can not only give play to the advantages of cobalt-free, but also solve the pain points of cobalt-free.

Under this circumstance, Honeycomb Energy has launched two new cobalt-free battery products: the 590 module battery cell with a long life of 115Ah, which can achieve a range of 1.2 million kilometers, and the L6 thin-film cobalt-free long battery cell with a long battery life of 880 kilometers.
