The traditional courses of "Introduction to Physics" and "Introduction to Life Sciences" focus on imparting knowledge points, and formulas and experimental details are important contents of knowledge points. Knowledge points are the results of scientific discoveries. However, these two history of science courses focus on introducing the historical context of important scientific discoveries, allowing students to understand the process of scientific discovery, which is a process of critical thinking.
For example, in the course "A Brief History of Life Sciences", the course not only talks about the historical process from smallpox vaccination to the discovery of penicillin, but also talks about the side effects caused by vaccines, the resistance to vaccines caused by the side effects, the resurgence of diseases caused by resistance, and a series of social and ethical issues arising from them. Among them, there is no lack of critical thinking education. This is an attempt by Tsinghua SEM to integrate critical thinking education into natural science courses.
The development and evolution of physical science and life science and their impact on society are not only very interesting, but also help us understand the nature of science. However, these contents are not included in the standard physics and biology courses.
I believe that people's interest in science and technology will inevitably lead to an interest in the history of science and technology. Entering the long history of human science and technology, you will have more thoughts about the past and the future.
