Everyday traffic jams pose a safety risk to vulnerable road users. According to foreign media reports, Volvo Trucks has launched two safety systems that focus on protecting pedestrians and cyclists.

Volvo Trucks is continuously developing active safety systems to protect vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. This is all part of the company’s long-term vision of zero accidents involving Volvo trucks.
To this end, Volvo is launching Active Side Collision Avoidance Support, where the keyword is active. This is an evolution of the existing safety system, with the addition of active braking. The system uses radar sensors to detect approaching cyclists and can alert the driver. If necessary, it can now also actively brake the truck to avoid a collision with the cyclist when turning the truck to the passenger side. From November 2024, users around the world will be able to order Active Side Collision Avoidance Support for Volvo FH series, FM and FMX models.
The second system is Volvo Trucks' new generation Collision Warning with Emergency Brake. The system was first introduced in 2012 and has been continuously improved since then. It uses cameras and radar sensors to monitor traffic conditions in front of the truck. If a risk of collision is detected, the system alerts the driver and, if necessary, automatically applies the brakes to avoid or mitigate the collision.
With the latest improvements, the system can detect not only other vehicles, but also pedestrians and cyclists, and warn and brake. The system has been certified to comply with the stricter new European regulations for advanced emergency braking systems (which will come into effect in 2028). Moreover, Volvo Trucks' system even exceeds this upcoming regulation in terms of design for covered traffic situations. From 2025, the automatic braking system will be standard on all FH, FM and FMX trucks in Europe and will be available as an option worldwide.
Anna Wrige Berling, Director Traffic & Product Safety at Volvo Trucks, said: “Trucks are responsible for 15% of fatal road accidents. City traffic can be challenging even for experienced truck drivers. At Volvo Trucks, we are constantly working to improve the safety of our trucks to protect drivers and other road users.”
