On October 6, Sony released the ISX038 image sensor, which is used in automotive cameras.
According to the official introduction, the ISX038 image sensor is equipped with Sony's self-developed ISP (image signal processor), which can independently process and output RAW images required for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving systems (AD) to detect and identify the external environment of the vehicle, as well as YUV images provided to vehicle-mounted equipment such as driving recorders and AR cameras.
In terms of image functionality, the ISX038 also performs well. The sensor can enable HDR and LED flicker suppression functions at the same time to ensure accurate capture and identification of targets in various complex environments. Especially in environments with large differences in light and dark, such as tunnel entrances and exits, the HDR function can significantly improve the detection and identification capabilities of vehicles.
Given the widespread use of LED devices in current transportation facilities, the LED flicker suppression function of the ISX038 is particularly important. During HDR shooting, the sensor can effectively suppress LED flicker to ensure the stability and clarity of the captured image.
In addition, the ISX038 image sensor uses a self-developed pixel structure and exposure method to further improve the saturated illumination range. When using HDR shooting and LED flicker suppression functions at the same time, the sensor can achieve a wide dynamic range of up to 106dB (up to 130dB in dynamic range priority setting). This design not only improves shooting quality, but also helps reduce motion artifacts when shooting moving objects.
It is worth mentioning that the ISX038 image sensor is compatible with existing Sony products currently used by many automakers, so there is no need to worry about compatibility issues. At the same time, the sensor will obtain the "Level 2" certification of the "AEC-Q100" automotive application reliability test standard before mass production, and adopt a development process that complies with the "ISO 26262" road vehicle functional safety standard to ensure that it meets the requirements of the automotive safety level "ASIL-B(D)", providing automakers with safer and more reliable solutions.
