On April 18, CATL announced at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition that it will achieve carbon neutrality in core operations by 2025 and carbon neutrality in the value chain by 2035.
CATL’s annual report shows that CATL’s lithium battery sales in 2022 have reached 289GWh. SNE data pointed out that CATL’s global market share of power batteries and energy storage batteries is 37% and 43.4% respectively. As a result, CATL’s carbon neutrality plan can be described as the largest carbon neutrality initiative in the lithium battery industry.

In order to realize the zero-carbon strategy, CATL will achieve technological carbon reduction at five key nodes: mining, bulk raw materials, battery materials, battery cell manufacturing, and battery systems through four major innovation systems. At the same time, CATL has extensively carried out CREDIT projects in the supply chain. CREDIT is CATL’s innovative sustainable development transparency audit tool, which includes five modules: sustainable development management mechanism, business ethics code, environmental protection, labor practices, and responsible procurement. CATL It is hoped that this tool will help supply chain partners strengthen their awareness of sustainable development and explore their potential and paths for sustainable development.

At this auto show, CATL also showed the details of the battery passport. The battery passport is a digital twin of the physical battery and records many contents including battery information, raw material information, ESG evaluation, supply chain data, etc. In the future, by scanning the QR code of the Battery Passport, consumers will be able to view various battery information. The Battery Passport provides the necessary data support for consumers to choose green, low-carbon, and responsible batteries.
It is reported that CATL is the only company in my country that participates in the battery passport pilot project of the Global Battery Alliance. According to the plan, CATL will also actively participate in the formulation and improvement of battery passport-related regulations in the future to promote industry supply chain transparency, battery life cycle traceability management and Recycling.
Looking back on the past, CATL has continued to practice green development. In 2019, CATL took the lead in the industry in using blockchain technology for raw material traceability; in 2021, its Yibin base became the industry's first zero-carbon battery factory and has completed carbon neutral certification in 2022; in 2022, CATL will promote 400 energy-saving projects For the remaining items, a total of 450,000 tons of carbon emissions have been reduced, and the proportion of green electricity usage has increased to 26.60%.
