According to foreign media reports, NASA announced that its researchers are conducting the SABERS (Improving Solid-State Battery Charging Efficiency and Safety) project and have achieved very good results, developing a power device with an energy density of 500Wh/kg. Batteries with more than twice the energy density of modern electric car batteries.

Interestingly, NASA’s research is part of its “Convergent Aeronautics Solutions” project and is research in the field of aviation. However, the newly developed batteries have wider applications.
The mass of batteries manufactured using this method can be reduced by 30-40%, and the energy density can be doubled. In comparison, the energy density of the 4680 "biscuit" battery used in Tesla Model Y is less than 300 Wh/kg. However, the energy density of the CATL M3P phosphate battery that will be used in the base Model Y is only 160 Wh/kg.
SABERS' batteries are not individually packaged. Instead, all solid-state cells are stacked in a box. This design not only makes the battery lighter and more energy-dense than current electric vehicle batteries, but also allows solid-state batteries to exert their inherent characteristics. Durability. NASA tests of this new solid-state battery found that it can withstand temperatures twice as high as the lithium-ion batteries currently used in electric vehicles before exploding and catching fire.
Therefore, the battery is suitable for use in aircraft, and the NASA team is testing the sustained performance of the solid-state battery under higher pressure and temperature. After all, for solid-state battery technology, improving battery safety is very important.
