In an environment where "bottleneck" problems frequently occur, Wang Chuanfu led BYD to unlock one core technology after another, thus becoming a truly independent national auto company. This time, BYD has come up with the fifth "black technology", and Wang Chuanfu is targeting Germany's Bosch, vowing to break its decades-long monopoly.
1. Unlocking new energy core technologies
Wang Chuanfu, who was born as an engineer, injected the "technology-driven" gene into BYD at the beginning of its establishment. BYD has developed one "black technology" after another with the momentum of a leader, becoming the leading car company in the global new energy vehicle industry. The blade battery, which puts the safety of car owners first, is a star product in the field of power batteries; the DM-i super hybrid technology has completely detonated the plug-in hybrid market; the pure electric vehicle architecture e-platform 3.0 has formed BYD's "moat" in the field of new energy vehicles; the CTB battery-body integration technology makes the upper limit of fuel vehicles the lower limit of electric vehicles.
2. BYD targets Germany's Bosch
Why does BYD spend a lot of manpower and material resources to develop these "black technologies"? Because without core technology, there will be no real national car companies. Since the Year of the Tiger, the sales of many domestic car companies have plummeted. The important reason is that foreign suppliers have not supplied parts in a timely manner. Even Great Wall and Changan, which are among the top three domestic companies, are in this situation. For example, in February this year, Great Wall Motors only sold 59,155 units, a year-on-year drop of 20%. In the announcement, Great Wall bluntly stated that the decline in production and sales was due to insufficient supply of the electronic stability system (ESP) of Bosch, the exclusive supplier of the ESP configuration of the company's main models.
In February, BYD's sales soared 336.2% year-on-year, reaching 90,268 units, which was not affected by the industry-wide parts supply chain crisis. The fundamental reason is that BYD is the world's first automaker to master the core technology of the entire electric vehicle industry chain, and is not afraid of being "choked" by foreign capital. After pulling Toyota and other Japanese companies off the altar in the hybrid field, Wang Chuanfu is targeting Germany's Bosch. The recent launch of BYD's intelligent torque control system iTAC may break the monopoly of Bosch ESP in China and pull Germany's Bosch off the altar.
3. Come up with the fifth “black technology”
Large multinational automakers basically have their own body stabilization systems, such as BMW DSC, Volvo DSTC, Toyota VSC, Mitsubishi ASC, Honda VSA, and Nissan VDC. Domestic brands do not have their own body stabilization systems and can only purchase them from suppliers such as Bosch. As the world's largest supplier of automotive parts, Bosch ESP is basically the best solution for fuel vehicles to stabilize their body posture. Data shows that among my country's automotive body stabilization system suppliers in 2021, Bosch ranked first, with a market share of 40.59%, almost occupying half of the market.
With Bosch ESP, vehicles have an extra insurance. When the wheels slip, ESP can help rebalance the wheel's grip, quickly control and stabilize the body's posture, and effectively prevent the vehicle from losing control. However, ESP has many shortcomings and deficiencies. The wheel speed sensor it relies on has low accuracy, resulting in low detection accuracy and limited correction measures. BYD's fifth "black technology" - iTAC, in addition to the wheel speed sensor, can also control the power output of the front and rear motors through the motor resolver sensor, thereby increasing the progress by 300 times.
Moreover, iTAC can predict the trend of vehicle torque changes 50ms earlier than ESP, intervene earlier and nip the vehicle in the bud. In addition, in terms of torque adjustment, ESP can only reduce torque by braking, while iTAC is upgraded to torque transfer, which can not only maintain vehicle stability but also maintain power output. If Bosch ESP is the optimal solution for fuel vehicle body stability, then BYD iTAC is the optimal solution for electric vehicle body stability. The ultimate goal of iTAC is to dethrone ESP. BYD wants to break the decades-long monopoly of Bosch in Germany.
