Beijing time, February 11, morning news, the United States is preparing to invest nearly 5 billion US dollars in five years to deploy thousands of electric vehicle charging stations. The Biden administration will announce a detailed plan on Thursday.
Last November, the U.S. Congress approved a $1 trillion infrastructure bill, of which electric vehicle charging stations are part. The Biden administration will allocate $615 million in 2022, and states must first submit plans and obtain federal approval before they can receive funding.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg believes the grants will allow the federal government to work with states, labor and the private sector to build a national charging network and win the electric vehicle race.
By 2030, Biden hopes that 50% of new cars sold in the United States will be electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, and 500,000 new charging stations will be built; but he does not agree to gradually stop selling new gasoline cars before 2030.
In the document, the Biden administration also instructed that states should prioritize investments in interstate highways. The document states that states should strive to build DC charging stations, and charging stations should have at least four ports that can charge four electric vehicles at the same time. Electric vehicle charging facilities should be built every 50 miles on interstate highways, and the location should not be more than 1 mile from the highway. More than 80% of the cost of charging facilities will be borne by the federal government, and the rest will be borne by the private sector and the states. The federal government believes that states should allow private entities to install and operate charging stations.
