According to foreign media reports, Xos, a manufacturer of pure electric commercial vehicles , announced the launch of the Lyra Series™ ("leer-ah") battery system, including Lyra 30™ and Lyra 60™, which will be installed in Xos new vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2021. Lyra Series is Xos' second proprietary battery system series, with a 52% increase in system-level weight energy density and a 45% increase in volume energy density, and a lighter overall compact package to achieve a higher net payload.

“We’ve been delivering battery systems for commercial use since 2018. Building on this durability and reliability, this new range of battery systems allows for greater efficiency and modularity to meet more customer needs,” said Giordano Sordoni, co-founder and COO of Xos. “We have long focused on building specialized batteries that can withstand the rigors of commercial use. This next generation battery system is an important milestone in our journey to continuously improve battery technology.”
The Lyra Series covers two battery sizes, Lyra 30 (29.4 kWh) and Lyra 60 (61.8 kWh), which enable last-mile delivery vehicles to achieve a range of 25 miles and 50 miles, respectively. Both battery systems can be installed on all existing vehicles built on Xos' proprietary modular chassis platform X-Platform, and the battery systems can be combined to achieve the range required by the fleet. Each system has independent recirculation air cooling and an independent battery management system for enhanced modularity and higher reliability.
“Lyra Series, like our other batteries, is purpose-built for the commercial trucking market,” said Rob Ferber, Xos’ chief technology officer. “We design, manufacture and supply chain our systems ourselves. This gives us the flexibility to introduce enhancements or address current supply chain challenges, and we can operate and scale production faster with greater flexibility.”
