TomTom's new navigation system is cloud-based and is able to take advantage of the latest ultra-fast route planning, search and maps, while also offering a fully functional offline mode. When no data connection is available, the solution switches to the in-car software and maps, so it is usable in all situations.
Antoine Saucier, Managing Director of TomTom Automotive, said: “Cloud delivery is at the heart of the new TomTom Navigation for Automotive. We have combined the safety and comfort of an in-dash system with the latest and ultra-fast experience of a smartphone app.”
Drivers can enjoy a new user interface design that is safe and easy to use. The system interface can be displayed in different sizes and aspect ratios in the center console, instrument cluster screen, head-up display (HUD) and passenger screen. This integrated approach means that important information, such as turn-by-turn and lane-level navigation instructions, as well as traffic and hazard warnings, can be projected onto the vehicle HUD or instrument cluster screen, thereby improving driver safety and comfort. Drivers can also interact directly with the TomTom navigation system through voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Cerence or Houndify.
TomTom's next-generation navigation system integrates with vehicle sensors to display important information related to ADAS, refueling and charging needs. Its dynamic mileage mapping function helps drivers view vehicle mileage, which is particularly important for electric vehicles . If the predicted distance is not enough to reach the selected destination, the driver will receive an alert to find a charging station and compare the costs of available charging stations along the route and within the mileage range. Once the charging station is selected, it will be added as the driver's destination.
TomTom's new navigation system provides automakers with fast, low-cost routes to improve the navigation experience. The technology is easily integrated into all in-vehicle infotainment systems, as confirmed by multiple Tier 1s. The solution is flexible and can be integrated with multiple brands, car lines and models. In addition, as a pre-integrated stack, the solution can be delivered through SDK (Software Development Kit) and API (Application Programming Interface).
