Recently, according to domestic media reports, Li Shufu, chairman of Geely Holding, said when talking about the "chip shortage" in the automotive industry that Geely Auto has comprehensively checked the chip supply risks, combined with the 2021 sales target, and locked in long-term orders of 3-6 months to suppliers based on risk levels, so as to lock in advance and ensure that production is not affected.

In addition, Li Shufu also revealed a key piece of information that Geely's "China Chip" strategy, which began to be laid out in 2019, is about to be implemented. "Our independently developed central control chip will be installed on the car in 2023."

Li Shufu said that while Geely is making strategic purchases in advance to prepare inventory, it is also rapidly promoting the introduction of domestic brand chips and chips independently developed and designed.

According to Li Shufu, the chip developed independently by Geely is likely to be the chip of ECARX. ECARX Technology is a technology innovation enterprise strategically invested and independently operated by Geely Holding Group. Its business mainly focuses on automotive chips, smart cockpits, smart driving, high-precision maps, big data and Internet of Vehicles cloud platforms.

On October 20, 2020, CoreEngine Technology officially debuted in Wuhan. It was jointly funded by Ecarx Technology, a strategic investment of Geely Holding Group, and Arm China. It focuses on the research and development, manufacturing, and sales of high-performance automotive-grade integrated circuits and modules.

According to the plan at the time, the first automotive chip will use a 7-nanometer process technology and is expected to be taped out in 2021.

The global chip shortage has affected many automakers including Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, and Hyundai. In an interview, Li Shufu also said that Geely has comprehensively checked the chip supply risks and locked in long-term orders of 3-6 months with suppliers to ensure that production is not affected.
