According to foreign media reports, Korean auto parts company Hyundai Mobis has officially entered the windshield head-up display (HUD) market, an advanced system that allows drivers to easily view driving data, thereby ensuring safer and more convenient driving. HUD is a system that displays data on the windshield in front of the driver's seat. The HUD product developed by Hyundai Mobis was first installed on the recently launched Hyundai Genesis GV80 SUV model.
Carsten Weiss, head of Hyundai Mobis' IVI System R&D Center, said: "This 12-inch windshield HUD is our first HUD product. Compared with existing HUD products, its screen is larger and it displays a variety of GPS-linked data, including driving routes, traffic sign information and driver assistance information. Once the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is activated, the HUD will display traffic data of surrounding vehicles."
With features like these, Mobis' 12-inch windshield HUD can greatly help drivers avoid distracted driving, such as those caused by controlling GPS and using smartphones, which distracts the driver's vision or interferes with cognitive abilities.
The company has also developed high-end augmented reality (AR) HUD technology that is optimized for autonomous driving environments. Currently, Hyundai Mobis is accelerating research and development to mass-produce AR HUD.
By starting mass production of HUD, the company has acquired mass production technologies for four core infotainment technologies, namely Head-Up Display (HUD), Pure Digital Instrument Cluster, Surround View Monitor (SVM), and Audio, Video, Navigation and Telematics (AVNT).
To gain a competitive advantage in the infotainment market, Hyundai Mobis plans to actively utilize these four technologies. For example, the company is currently developing an integrated infotainment system platform that combines system-specific controllers into a single controller.
Currently, Hyundai Mobis has a complete lineup of windshield HUD products, and can provide a full range of HUD products from general models (10 inches and below) to high-end models (12 inches and above). Currently, HUD is evolving from a simple convenience system to a safety system, and Hyundai Mobis has become a new and powerful player in this market with its product competitiveness and product lineup.
At the same time, Mobis has also promoted the development of AR HUD systems, which are considered to be one of the core components in the era of autonomous driving. AR HUD is a technology that displays 3D virtual data on the actual road. It is the core of the next generation of HUD technology and can display the exact position or distance of the vehicle, effectively providing information about the surrounding environment in real time, thereby greatly reducing the risk of accidents.
Hyundai Mobis developed hologram-based AR HUD technology in 2017 and plans to start mass production this year. In addition, the company is also working on developing new AR HUD technology that will be equipped with digital holograms, nanostructures, and electronic control.
In addition, Mobis also plans to develop various connected solutions, combining integrated infotainment platforms with communication, convenience and safety technologies, to become a leading ICT company and serve future automotive technologies. (All pictures in this article are from Hyundai Mobis)
