On June 6, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially issued 5G commercial licenses, which means that my country will officially enter the first year of 5G commercialization.

Next, 5G technology will begin to be applied in all walks of life, including the mobile phone industry, medical industry, construction industry...this naturally includes the automotive industry.

Compared with the previous 4G technology, 5G will bring unlimited imagination space to the automotive industry with its high speed and low power consumption.

As the saying goes in the communications industry: "4G changes life, 5G changes society."

The arrival of 5G technology can be said to add further momentum to the Chinese automobile industry, which is undergoing the "new four modernizations" transformation.

So, what is the potential of 5G technology? And what changes will it bring to the automotive industry?

At the industrial level, 5G’s strength lies in “intelligent manufacturing”

At present, 70-80% of mechanical production equipment in China cannot realize the Internet of Things, so it can only meet basic production needs. It is impossible to establish a direct connection between people and machines, and there are "errors" in control accuracy.

Through the advantages of low latency, high reliability and massive connections, 5G can improve the accuracy of equipment such as robots in factories, effectively reduce the "defect rate" in production, further improve production efficiency and reduce production costs.

As far as the most basic production costs are concerned, for example, a factory can check how much water, electricity and gas the workshop uses every month or every day, but it cannot be sure how much water and electricity are used to manufacture "each car".

If a device called NB-IOT architecture is installed through 5G technology, this device can read data from your electricity meter to the cloud, and then you can know how much water, electricity and gas are used to produce each car.

At the same time, this also allows companies to know where there is waste and where they should save.

Simply put, 5G's low latency and high reliability network characteristics can help companies achieve fully automated operation of production lines.

In addition, it can also realize remote control operation of large-scale mechanical equipment in specific environments, significantly improving the company's production efficiency, improving product quality and reducing labor costs.

At present, many domestic automobile companies have actively promoted C2B large-scale customization of complete vehicles and smart factory projects for parts, and are using 5G technology to unify the transmission protocols and standards of smart manufacturing and smart factories, such as SAIC and China Mobile, GAC and China Telecom, FAW and China Unicom, etc.

Feng Xingya, general manager of GAC Group, believes: "Driven by 5G, automobiles will move from assembly line production to intelligent manufacturing, and industrial AR and industrial automation control will be widely used in the field of automobile production."

For the automotive manufacturing industry, the implementation of 5G may accelerate the "deep evolution" of the industry.

At the product level, 5G’s strength lies in its intelligence

In the automotive industry, the implementation of 5G technology, in addition to the industrial level, can only affect the product level at this stage.

The two largest projects at the product level are autonomous driving and vehicle networking.

Compared with the "high difficulty" of autonomous driving, the first scenario where 5G will be implemented may be the Internet of Vehicles. Just like the most basic high-definition map of the Internet of Vehicles, 5G technology can help achieve the absolute standard of "zero error".

Currently, most automotive products widely use the GPS global positioning system, but the accuracy can only reach 10 meters. Even if the 4G network is used, it is still insufficient in accuracy.

Let me give you an example. For example, when a car owner is driving according to the navigation route, if he misses the exit or entrance of a city viaduct, the navigation system will mistakenly think that the driver has left or entered the viaduct, and the navigation system will not recalculate the route for a long time, causing the driver to take a longer and longer detour.

5G technology can achieve high-precision positioning by relying on new coding methods, millimeter wave frequency bands, etc., with an accuracy of up to millimeter level.

At present, many domestic independent brand car companies, including BYD Auto, Changan Automobile, and SAIC Group, have signed strategic cooperation agreements with Huawei to accelerate the intelligent transformation and upgrading in the field of Internet of Vehicles.

In addition, GAC Group, Geely, FAW, BAIC and other automobile companies have reached cooperation agreements on 5G technology with third-party companies.

It can be said that 5G accelerates the implementation of Internet of Vehicles in Chinese automotive products.

At the same time, the implementation of the Internet of Vehicles will also help the "evolution" of autonomous driving technology.

Existing autonomous driving technology mainly relies on cameras, millimeter waves and lidar to complete data collection, but it still has shortcomings in response speed and accuracy.

After the application of 5G, autonomous driving technology will achieve a qualitative leap in measurement, control and positioning.

With the characteristic of "low latency", the vehicle can maintain safe driving without human driving. Even when encountering complex road conditions, the system can re-input the algorithm based on adjacent vehicles and their environment to achieve the process of "self" learning, and ultimately build a fully automatic driving system headed by vehicles, roads, clouds and networks.

For the automotive industry, 5G is not the future, it is just a "key" to open the door to the future.

With the deep integration of 5G technology and the automotive industry, China may usher in a wave of explosive growth in the intelligence of its automobiles.

It is conceivable that the "evolution" of the automotive industry will accelerate.
