Beijing time, April 24, according to foreign media reports, experienced drivers can usually predict when the traffic lights at the intersection will change from red to green by observing the pedestrians' walk lights, but a new communication technology from Audi can allow drivers to successfully avoid red lights in large cities and understand what speed they need to maintain in order to catch the green light in time without stopping.

The technology, called Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory, uses vehicle-to-infrastructure communications to recommend ideal speeds for drivers, thereby achieving a smooth “green light all the way” effect and reducing the number of necessary stops to wait for green lights. Many automakers and related companies around the world are still testing this technology, which is expected to reduce traffic accidents while alleviating urban traffic congestion. The Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory can display the red light countdown ahead in the car. In addition, if the vehicle judges that it cannot pass the intersection before the green light turns red, the green light countdown will also be displayed on the dashboard, reminding the driver to brake in advance.

Audi launched this technology in 13 markets as early as 2016, covering 4,700 intersections, including cities such as Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, Washington and Northern Virginia. It has now expanded to four new regions: Denver, Gainesville, Florida, Orlando and White Plains, New York.

The technology is reportedly operated through the Audi Connect Prime communications system and receives information through the vehicle's 4G LTE data connection. When the traffic light is red, the vehicle's instrument panel or head-up display will indicate how much time it will take for the signal to turn green. Audi said the added information will help reduce driver stress. The technology was first introduced in the 2017 Audi A4 and Q7, and expanded to the A5 and Q5 in the 2018 model year. All Audi models except the A3, TT and R8 are equipped with the technology for the 2019 model year.
