In the coming weeks, Schaeffler will equip the 2013 Ford Kuga with several smart fuel technologies, including a thermal management module, a disconnectable all-wheel drive system, a normally-on starter/generator and a latching valve. The latter three technologies will be developed in North America.

The thermal management module installed in the Ford Kuga will be similar to the one installed in Audi vehicles. Hemphill said this version is not as comprehensive as the module installed in Audi vehicles. However, the module can enable the engine to reach the optimal operating temperature in the shortest time and continuously and accurately control the engine temperature.

According to Schaeffler experts, the Ford Kuga's fuel consumption in urban/highway conditions will be reduced by 1% after it is equipped with a thermal management module.

Schaeffler timely four-wheel drive disconnect clutch

Schaeffler's timely four-wheel drive system will separate the unused drive shaft from the engine to avoid unnecessary transmission losses. This method can save 2% of fuel in urban conditions and 6% of fuel in highway conditions. In addition, in urban conditions, the perpetual motion generator can save 6% of fuel through the one-way clutch wrapped in a spring.

The disconnect clutch, perpetual motor and self-locking valve in the timely four-wheel drive are all second-generation products of Schaeffler and are still in the development stage. Hemphill said: "These technologies will be mass-produced later this year and will be put into use in the 2017 model."

Schaeffler perpetual motion motor

Hemphill revealed that the demonstration vehicle equipped with a conventional powertrain and Schaeffler's intelligent fuel technology meets the 2020 CAFE fuel economy regulations. Subsequent demonstration vehicles will add hybrid systems to achieve the 2025 CAFE fuel economy regulations.
