Daihatsu Industries exhibited the concept car "D-X" at the "42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011" (open to the public from December 3 to 11, 2011, at Tokyo Big Sight), which is equipped with a new two-cylinder direct injection engine that uses a turbocharger (Figure 1). The engine is currently under development, and the fuel efficiency target is 35km/L (JC08 mode).
The new engine has a displacement of 660mL, a maximum output of 47kW/6000rpm, and a maximum torque of 110N·m/2000rpm (Figure 2). The "Mira e:S" launched by Daihatsu Industries in September 2011 also uses an engine with the same displacement, with a fuel efficiency of 30.0km/L, but the maximum output and maximum torque are 38kW and 60N·m respectively, which are significantly lower than the new engine. Judging from the increase in the output power and torque of the new engine, it can be said that the new engine has greatly improved efficiency.
Daihatsu Industries exhibited this engine at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009, and at that time emphasized the following features: (1) It is a two-cylinder engine with low heat loss; (2) The main purpose of supercharging is to increase the amount of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) to improve fuel efficiency (improve fuel efficiency); (3) It is a direct injection engine, etc. (see this site report). This time, by adopting Daihatsu Industries' independently developed active ignition method, fuel efficiency has been further improved, and a fuel efficiency target of 35km/L has been established for the first time.
Active ignition technology is a method of applying a high-frequency electric field to the combustion chamber when using a normal plug to ignite, so that the mixed gas in the combustion chamber generates free radicals that are easier to burn. Although increasing the amount of EGR helps improve fuel efficiency, if it is increased too much, the combustion will become unstable. For this reason, Daihatsu Industries adopts active ignition to stabilize the combustion state. As a result, the amount of EGR can be greatly increased, and the fuel efficiency is greatly improved.
