TRW Automotive of the United States has released a concept design of a folding steering wheel that can be stored in the dashboard to make it easier for drivers to get in and out of the vehicle.
The concept is to retract and fold the two handlebar-shaped steering systems and store them in the dashboard. This can greatly improve the comfort of the driver getting in and out of the car. When the engine is started, the steering wheel unfolds to the driving position. The driving position can also be set and saved by the driver in advance.
According to TRW Automotive, with the increasing number of elderly people and the development of urbanization around the world, the automotive industry is promoting the miniaturization of car bodies. A/B-class cars and small electric vehicles (EVs) also need to realize technology that allows elderly drivers and drivers with limited mobility to get in and out of the car smoothly. According to TRW Automotive, the company's customers are very interested in this concept and it is expected that the concept will be used in cars within 5 years.
