The integration of fixed-point and floating-point capabilities in the same DSP core will fundamentally change the way algorithms are developed and deployed for embedded systems. This may sound a bit exaggerated, but it is true. The effort to implement algorithms in fixed-point digital systems is immeasurable. However, the need for speed makes this work necessary because there are no fast floating-point DSPs available on the market. We can easily and conveniently port algorithms developed with floating-point tools such as Matlab to the DSP without the laborious conversion to fixed-point processing. With the floating-point computing capabilities of TI\'s new C66x DSPs, most of the conversion work is no longer necessary.
