The MCP73828 is a linear charge management controller for space-saving and cost-sensitive applications. The MCP73828 combines high-precision constant voltage and controlled current regulation, battery pre-charge, battery temperature monitoring, and charge completion indication in a space-saving 8-pin MSOP package. The MCP73828 provides a standalone charge management solution. The MCP73828 charges the battery in three phases: pre-charge, controlled current, and constant voltage. If the battery voltage is below the internal low-voltage threshold, the device pre-charges the battery with a listening current. This pre-charge phase protects the lithium-ion battery and minimizes heat dissipation. After the pre-charge phase, the MCP73828 enters the controlled current phase. The charge current can be programmed through an external sense resistor to achieve flexible application design. Based on the battery voltage, the charge current starts from the listening current and rises to the peak current established by the sense resistor. This phase will continue until the battery voltage reaches the charging stable voltage value. Then, the MCP73828 enters the final phase, the constant voltage phase. The voltage regulation accuracy is better than ±1% over the entire operating temperature range and supply voltage range of the device. The regulated voltage of MCP73828-4.1 is preset to 4.1V, while that of MCP73828-4.2 is 4.2V. When the charging current is reduced to 10% of the peak charging current established by the detection resistor, the charging completion indication output CD10 is output. The operating voltage range of MCP73828 is 4.5V to 5.5V. It can work normally in the entire ambient temperature range of -20°C to +85°C.
