TDK-EPC, a subsidiary of TDK Corporation, introduces an extended series of EPCOS PQ ferrite cores. With the addition of the PQ40/40 and PQ50/50 cores, the PQ core series covers all sizes from PQ16/11.6 to PQ50/50. The PQ cores were developed specifically for transformers for switched-mode power supplies. The insertion height of these cores can be adjusted while maintaining the same footprint by appropriately adjusting the core. The new ferrite cores can be used for standard wound transformers as well as planar transformers in AC/DC and DC/DC converters. The main advantages of the PQ cores compared to conventional ETD/ER/E core designs are the stable round center leg and the larger outer surface. The round center leg and the larger winding surface area allow the copper wire to be shortened. As a result, the transformer production costs can be reduced. In addition, the larger outer surface ensures better heat dissipation. The PQ core shape has been optimized so that the same transformer performance as the e-core can be achieved with reduced size and weight. PQ cores can be made from a variety of ferrite materials such as: N49, N51, N87, N92, N95 and N97.
