The central focus of this white paper is designing isolation circuits that can withstand the rigors of industrial environments. Industrial electronic equipment often uses high voltage isolators to protect the system and the user from potentially dangerous voltages. It is well known that industrial equipment must be able to operate reliably in the harshest environments, which include the normal standard of strong electromagnetic fields, surges, fast transients, and high background noise. This environment presents a challenge for designing reliable isolation circuits for long-term equipment operation. Optocouplers have been the \"default\" signal isolation device for the past four decades, but recent breakthroughs in silicon-based isolation technology have enabled the mass production of smaller, faster, more reliable and more cost-effective devices that have begun to replace optocouplers in many end applications. Among the competitive silicon-based isolators currently on the market, Silicon Labs\' ISOpro series isolators are the most advanced isolators, which provide best-in-class timing performance, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and external field immunity, power consumption, size and cost. This white paper explores industrial isolation issues and methods to apply RF radio frequency isolation technology to improve system robustness and performance.
